Mind Altering Substances in the Animal Kingdom

by DEJA FORONDA

Mind altering substances have been used for the majority of our history. We see tales of it in religious history while science uncovers chalices and other religions elements used in ancient sacraments coated in psychoactive compounds.

Only during the last century has a war been declared on the use of these.

Giorgio Samorini, an Italian ethnobotanist that discusses animals' use of psychedelics but also how that relates to human’s use of psychedelics.

Various species throughout the animal kingdom seek out mind altering substances. Giorgio Samorini developed a behaviorist theory that states animals (including humans) have a natural impulse to use these substances based on a need to adapt and change to shifting environments. Samorini reviewed different animals in settings where they benefited from using mind altering substances. For example, the use of inebriants (intoxicants) can help different animals with enhanced senses and perceptual acuity. Samorini’s book ‘Animals and Psychedelics' breaks down different situations a variety of animals use inebriants to help them succeed in the wild such as gorillas digging up iboga roots, drunk elephants, and intoxicated birds. Another example supporting this claim is the many articles being written on hunting dogs being trained with psilocybin in indigenous tribes.

This theory shows that it is a natural impulse in species (animals or humans) to use inebriants.

Education on these substances is being studies across the globe and it supports the idea that it is natural to use them. Humans are hardwired to constantly adapt, learn and change. When there are natural compounds to help further adaptability and cognitive improvement, expect there to be some pushback related to beliefs.

The use of psychedelics is an attempt for us to adapt and grow in our lives. It is a natural longing for knowledge and improved perspectives. Having the opportunity to explore your current state and improve your wellbeing is an amazing opportunity we have with the use of these plants and the basic nature of our species is being denied with the “war on drugs”.
