Project Homeless Connect
Big-hearted Utahns spent October 6, 2017, working to improve lives and prevent homelessness at a one-day at the Salt Palace Convention Center called Project Homeless Connect. Volunteers guided homeless individuals to barbers, dentists, lawyers, bike repairers, veterinarians, healthcare workers, housing and employment experts and agencies, and dozens of other service providers.
Photo by Nina StrehlPhoto by Nina StrehlA judge even presided over a pop-up justice court to help clear up citations and warrants. Many infractions were cleared up with proof that the person had visited with relevant service providers at the event.
Hundreds of volunteers set up the event, staffed it, guided attendees to providers, and broke down the event, helping Salt Lake City and Michael Akerlow, Deputy Director of SLC's Department of Community and Neighborhoods, complete a successful first event.
Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski highlighted the collaborations and partnerships that made the event possible, acknowledging the contributions of service providers, financial sponsors, and volunteers.
On Facebook, Shannen Rosser wrote, "Proof that humanity is at its best when we are helping." And Pat Trujillo called it, "Food for the soul."
