Nothing says classic summer evenings like drive-in movies. And what would a summer be without classics like “The Never Ending Story”?

This summer the Utah Film Center is hosting a series of drive-in shows at the Union Drive-In theatre. The Redwood Drive-in, located in West Valley City, also has a fun, more current (less classic/indy) film line-up this summer.

The first Utah Film Center movie was “The Lost Boys”, a 80s vampire flick but was cancelled because of the heavy smoke that filled the Salt Lake Valley, giving parts of the city the worst air quality in the world, so that one MAY be rescheduled and you’ll get your chance at watching a rad vampire movie with a great soundtrack.

If you’d like to stick with the classic movies, because come on, nothing feels more right than seeing an 80s or 90s classic on a late summer night at the drive-in, you’ve got plenty of options

  • The Lost Boys - TBD (May be rescheduled)

  • Time Bandits - August 7

  • Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - August 20

  • Office Space - August 27

Looking for more kid-friendly options?

  • Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse - August 14

  • The Never Ending Story - August 21

And finally, if you’re looking for something quirky, check out Moonrise Kingdom on August 28. The movie, rated p-13, is a charming story of youth love set in New England in the 60s. You can’t go wrong with a Wes Anderson film.

My recommendation? The Lost Boys (if the screening is rescheduled), but I also recommend introducing your kids to a true classic in The Never Ending Story.

Looking for a bonus night of fun this summer? Escape the heat of the city and head up to Alta for an outdoor screening of Better Off Dead, starring John Cusack. A movie under the stars in the mountains? Sounds magical.

Redwood Drive-In Summer Lineup

Just slightly outside of Salt Lake City, you can catch a full lineup of new movies at the Redwood Drive-In.

The Redwood Drive-In has showings on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Right now the lineup features:

  • The Suicide Squad

  • Jungle Cruise

  • Snake Eyes

  • Escape Room: Tournament Of Champions

Some huge movies are on deck for the Summer and Fall, including Marvel’s Venom and the new James Bond installment “No Time To Die”.

For the spooky season lovers, you can catch the “Hotel Transylvania” sequel, the animated “Addams Family” sequel and “Halloween Kills” at the drive-in.

Finally the movie that stands out to book worms far and near is “Dune” a sci-fi thriller based on its namesake 1965 novel. And the best part? You’ve still got time to read the book before seeing the movie.

Enjoy your summer at the Drive-In and don’t forget the popcorn.
