Bonneville Salt Flats and Raceway

The aptly-named Bonneville Salt Flats are (1) salty (table salt) and (2) flat. Because nothing grows on the thick layer of salt (the dried-up remains of ancient Lake Bonneville, which was as big as Lake Michigan) and because the areas is flat—as in F.L.A.T.—the Salt Flats form the perfect location for vehicles to go F.A.S.T., as in 630 mph fast. The Bonneville Salt Flats and International Raceway is the fastest place on earth, hosting several racing events throughout the summer months.

Each winter, water covers the Salt Flats. During the Spring and Summer, the water evaporates and the wind smooths the surface into a perfect surface for going fast. At the center of the flats, the salt is 5 feet thick.

Major racing events in 2018 include Speed Week (August 11-17), Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials (August 25-30), World of Speed (September 14-17), and Mike Cook’s Bonneville Shootout (September 20-24). Many types of vehicles race during the time trials, including motorcycles, dragsters, diesel and electric vehicles, and vehicles powered by jet engines and rockets.

The Bonneville Salt Flats are 125 miles west of Salt Lake City, tucked just 4 miles inside Utah’s I-80 border with Nevada. Though not permitted on the Salt Flats, private and public camping areas are nearby. Lodging may be found in Wendover, Nevada. Because of the harsh and isolated nature of the Salt Flats, spectators should make advanced preparations to enjoy the racing.
