Emergency Kit

Having an emergency kit is something we should all have ready and waiting near a home entrance in preparation for a disaster. The items should be easy to move, updated regularly, and should be able to last you 72 hours. Are you ready to create or update your kit? There is no perfect list, but here are 14 things to consider as you build your emergency kit:

  1. A change of clothes for everyone in the household. Think of layers, so the clothes will fit the weather. Don't forget extra socks.

  2. First-aid kit. Make sure it has a pair of scissors.

  3. Flashlight with extra batteries.

  4. You will want small bills.

  5. Portable radio with extra batteries.

  6. Medication.

  7. Extra set of eyeglasses or contact lenses.

  8. Water bottles.

  9. Think about granola bars or peanut butter and crackers.

  10. Female hygiene items.

  11. Diapers and wipes (if appropriate for your family).

  12. Cell phone charging cables (for communication).

  13. Extra set of keys.

  14. Various kinds of tape. Duct tape, masking tape and medical tape may all be useful.

If you have multiple members of your household, consider spreading these items among several backpacks. Input a tickler in your calendar that reminds you to restock twice a year. You can change out clothing if members of the family are growing, replenish the money that may have been used for the babysitter, restock with fresh food items, etc.

With any luck you will never need your emergency kit. But if you do, you will be grateful you took the time to prepare it. And remember to grab your book of important papers on your way out.
