Entering The Psychedelic Space: Ecstatic Dance

by MADELINE FERGUSON

In this series of articles, The Utah Bee is exploring ways for people to enter the psychedelic zone without the use of plant medicines or other substances. This week we bring you: Ecstatic Dance.

Ecstatic Dance emphasizes the proven power of dance and movement for self-expression and healing. Dance is proven by research to help people with anxiety, depression and PTSD. It not only releases endorphins but allows people to move freely in ways that feel authentic. In the book “The Body Keeps The Score”, the author makes a strong case for movement being one of the most powerful ways for people to move past PTSD.

Ecstatic Dance focuses on free-flowing dance rather than choreographed dance. It gives both the choice and freedom to people meaning they are in full control of their body at all times, making it great for trauma survivors.

“Join us and enjoy a safe space to dance without talking, drinking and the nightclub vibe. This is about getting great exercise, freeing your mind and body, and connecting with yourself and others in vibrant health,” read the official ecstatic dance website.

What To Expect At Ecstatic Dance?

Well, it depends. Different areas have different types of music and structure for the experience. But there are some rules followed at every ecstatic dance event.

  • The dance floor is a non-verbal space

  • The dance floor is a place of respect and safety

  • Dance floor must be free of talking, street shoes, photos, videos, and scents.

  • Ecstatic Dance is a sober experience

These rules help people get into their bodies and the power of movement without worrying about others or their own personal comfort or safety.

Most ecstatic dance events begin with a yoga flow synced with mellow, lyric free EDM music as the music builds into a more lively set, the yoga turns into free form dance and participants begin to move and dance in ways that feel just right for them.

The music is an essential part of the ecstatic dance experience, those of you who enjoy concerts and shows know the power a DJ or musician can have over a crowd. Ecstatic Dance DJs are specifically chosen for their ability to create soundscapes that encourage free movement and expression.

This type of music and freedom of movement can easily free up your mind to enter a more psychedelic and free space you may have previously experienced with the help of plant medicines. The dance is a meditative experience.

“The first time I experienced ecstatic dance, I felt like a portal of new expression opened up,” reads a quote from a frequent dancer.

Salt Lake Ctiy has a thriving ecstatic dance community. You can learn more or find out when and where to attend an event by joining their Facebook group.
